Cemetery #1 is the pioneer community cemetery begun prior to establishment of the Church. It was later deeded to the Church. Cemeteries #2 & #3, located behind the Church, were founded by the Church on Church owned property. They are separated by the access road.

Cemetery #1B is a cemetery begun more or less contemporaneously with #1 for slaves on the William Wood plantation and later used by the local black community, many of whom belonged to Mud Creek Church in the Antebellum and Reconstruction periods. Though the Church has no formal affiliation with the cemetery, MCBC has undertaken to provide limited maintenance on the cemetery due to its apparent abandonment.

Information and alphabetical listings of burials are contained in the following compendium, with each cemetery listed separately. At the end of this section you will find pdf files of each cemetery with the same information, plus a few photographs, and a location map of the cemeteries.

Please remember that upkeep of cemeteries is an expensive task and Mud Creek Baptist Church is a small rural church. Putting it plainly, we need help from outside the community, help from loved ones and descendants of the people whose cemetery we maintain. If you are interested in helping, contact one of the cemetery trustees at the email address shown in the picture below.

You may send contributions for the maintenance of the cemeteries to:

Mud Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund

9367 Mud Creek Church Road

Adger, AL 35006

If you have unused lots in Mud Creek Church Cemeteries, or are interested in lots here, you may contact us at the above email address. Assumption: 1850 Mud Creek Census lists a Linney E Huey, 8 years old – parents are Jesse G and Mary Catherine Huey. 1860 Freelands Census lists Liney E. as 17 years old. 1870 Mud Creek Census does not list her. James Huey, brother of Jesse, had a Blacksmith shop in the early Mud Creek Community.

** Information is in the Family History of Ella Wright Guaqueta. There is a Memorial Marker for Newton T. (Newt) Wright in the Wright plot in Cemetery #2.

The following information is furnished by Ella Wright Guaqueta: I was just going over my mother’s notes from phone calls and visits in 1992.
Newton T. (Newt) Wright, who died after the census of 1910, is believed to be
buried in an unmarked grave in Mud Creek Cemetery #1. (tel interview with Edith
Franklin Pruett in 24 Oct 1992. My mother also visited with Gertrude Parsons
Stringfellow who agreed). He was the husband of Colister Celeste Cliss Parsons
Wright and father of James Oliver, BB and Jerry D. Wright. Celeste is in Mud
Creek #2 in the Wright plot and I’ve placed a marker in memory of Newton T.
Wright there. The other grave site I came across in the notes was for Martha
Franklin, a daughter born about 1855 to Elcany (L. Cain or Cam) Franklin and
Julia Roberts (a daughter of Isaac Roberts. Isaac Roberts is buried in Mud Creek
#1). Martha Franklin married Lewis Dolphus (Adolphus, Dobb, Dolph) McFerrin
(father of Ella McFerrin Wright, wife of James Oliver Wright. Lewis Dolphus
McFerrin lived at Sparkling Ridge in the area and made coffins for people. He
also played the fiddle at gatherings). Martha Franklin died about 1896,
unmarked grave in Mud Creek #1. The information noted is from Anna Lou Champion
Wright (mother Rose Franklin married to Walker Champion. Rose Franklin’s father
was John Thomas (Gube) Franklin, her grandfather was Thomas Gore Franklin,
great grandfather was Owen Franklin. (I don’t know where Sparkling Ridge is.
Mother’s notes say that Ozella Plummer grew up next to Dolph McFerrin at
Sparkling Ridge. So from mother’s notes, that’s two unmarked graves in Mud
Creek #1 for your list.

*** Alabama Civil War Service Database
Last Name: Laird
Date of Birth: 1842/12/27
Birth Information: USA, Alabama, Jefferson County
Date of Death: 1861/11/30
Death Information: Alabama, Mobile. May 2016. Due to the irregularities of the rows of graves, this Cemetery is divided into Sections. Graves and lots are designated by Section number as well as Row and Lot number. All numbering begins on the right side of the Cemetery.

Section 1: Section 1 is in the right corner of Cemetery # 3 and fronts on the road. Row 1 begins in the right corner of cemetery with the Blackston, Kolb, and Snider headstone. There are three rows in this section.

Section 2: Section 2 faces the road and there is only one row. Row 1 begins to the left of the Trussell graves, starting with the Harmon plot.

Section 3: This Section is the 3 Rows behind Section 1 and 2. The Section includes the Reeves’ graves which are in Row 2, and extends straight left to the Smith plot.
